Darwin – Mitchell Street

dsc03526.JPG

Mitchell Street is the main social drag in Darwin. It kind of has the feel of a university town with travellers and backpackers filling the lovely open air pubs which virtually line Mitchell street. If you are looking to eat, stay drink or dance- it is on Mitchell Street. Locals bemoan the loss of their once frontier town rough and tumble reputation due to the shiny new entertainment district. Be warned- Along with the University feel – understandably goes university noise…there does tend to be a bit of revelry noise on Fridays and Saturdays, however, I found it bearable during the week.

There are several hotels, Motels, and Backpackers on Mitchell. I stayed at the The Value Inn. (+08 8981 4733 50 Mitchell Street) It is ok at best. For around $100 per night the rooms are tiny- but designed to fit 3. While they are clean and basic- they are self service with only your towels changed out each day (Value Inn Patrons have access to the Amenities of Melaleuca.) That said- Accomodation in the Top end- during the “Dry” is incredibly expensive all around.

Next door to the Value Inn is Melaleuca on Mitchell with a fantastic Pool Bar. Trully tropical and laid back this purpose built Australian hostel has so many gorgeous people parading around in swimwear, 3 faux rock swimming pools complete with waterfalls, and an amazing outdoor bar- I was sure MTV must be filming somewhere. The music is good, happy hour specials inexpensive, even the laundry facilities are above average. Clean your duds in the outdoor -elevated deck that overlooks the pool bar has which hammocks and tables for lounging. Dorms $22, Double Ensuite $100. +08 8941 7800 52 Mitchell Street.
