Darwin- NightCliff Aquatic Center

nighcliff1
What a find! This sparkling swimming center is built right on the cliff overlooking the Darwin Harbour up in the suburb of Nightcliff. At the corner of Nightcliff and Causarian Roads, It is virtually unpopulated. The pool facilities include swimming, lap lanes and a beautiful children’s pool with an Italian style fountain in the middle.

Keeping the pools breath takingly fresh even in the heat, those famous Aussie mesh awnings cover the assorted pools, adding a tropical feel and also providing much needed protection from the intense Top End sun. For those sun seekers like myself. (Darwin is not really a beach-goers paradise) the lush tropical garden with expansive views- provides more than enough space to lay a towel and sun worship to your hearts content. When you’ve had enough sun for a bit- the palm trees scattered about provide welcome shade and that hypnotic white noise of the dry leaves blowing in the breeze that when mixed with the intoxicating scent of sea salt lulls one into a trance on a warm summer day. nightcliff2

Perched on the overlook- the spot not only has enticing views to watch the dramatic tidal flows- it also has plenty of breeze to keep the area fresh. Picnic facilities and grills are available. $3 entrance for adults and open until after 7:00 each night- this would be a great place to come grill and to watch one of those famous Darwinian sunsets. For a little peace, quiet, water and sun- this place can’t be beat. M-Th- 6am-7pm, F- 6 am-7:30, Sa 8am-7:30 pm, Su 10 am-7:30 pm.
