Top Hostel Picks in the Gold Coast

Since the Gold Coast is a collection of beach towns in southern Queensland, it is especially hard to decide where to stay. You not only have to choose which hostel, but you also have to choose which beach town! It’s not easy if you’ve never been to the Gold Coast before, so I’m going to focus on a few popular spots and give you the low-down on where to stay in each.

Surfers Paradise

Surfers is the life of the party when it comes to the Gold Coast, and it is here that you will find shopping malls, restaurants, pubs and clubs galore. Cavill Avenue is a shopper’s delight in the daytime and a partier’s dream by night.

Stay at Islander Backpacker Resort

If you’re going to stay in a hostel in Surfers, this would probably be it. Do be aware that plenty of people are going to be around to party, so you might want to consider staying further outside of town if this is an issue for you. Otherwise, enjoy the comforts of an awesome backpackers resort that is only a block to the beach and a hop to the shops.

It is here that you can enjoy a number of amenities including a tennis court, BBQ area and a heated spa. Not only that, there’s a bar, a steam room and even an on-site bottle shop to enjoy at the Islander.

Southport is often considered to be the business side of the Gold Coast. You can come to this area if you want to steer clear of Surfers’ nightlife, yet still be close to the action for when necessary.

Stay at Aquarius Backpackers

aquarius busAquarius Backpackers is a gem among hostels given the fact that a very hands-on and fun woman, Jo, runs the show. Located a little bit outside of Surfers in Southport, this hostel is perfect for those that want a more family, get-to-know-each-other type of atmosphere. It is within convenient distance to language schools and universities, so many students will call this place home for at least a little while when hitting the Gold Coast.

There is plenty of lounge space in the TV room, and the bar – don’t get me started. There’s a pool table, swimming pool and clean rooms for hostel goers here. And, if you need a ride into town, there’s a free shuttle running to all hours of the night as part of the service.

Coolangatta is the southern beach city in the Gold Coast, and it is here that you’ll want to come if you’re wanting to learn to surf. It has a much quieter vibe, yet it is near plenty of good restaurants, beaches, and the airport isn’t far either.

Stay at Komune Resorts

komuneKomune is a special place. It has a boutique hotel vibe with the hostel dorm room prices that you can’t argue with. All the rooms have a beach view, as well as view of the pool and party area in the back. If you’re seeking more spacious housing, the apartment style rooms have a kitchen, living room and two bedrooms in each. But, don’t think you’ll be spending too much time up there! The outdoor movie lounge and rooms full of floor pillows will be calling your name sooner or later.

Komune may not be for all backpackers. The focus of this place is to get you out there surfing and back to relaxing. If you’re really into the hostel lifestyle, I would suggest the Coolangatta Sands down the road.
