QANTAS is looking to spend more than $US4 billion ($5.48billion) on about 20 new aircraft when it starts to phase out its venerable jumbo jet fleet later this decade.
The aircraft that revolutionised international air travel from Australia and helped drive down fares, the 747, is under challenge from newer, more efficient planes and the global squeeze on airline costs.
