Mr_mbuna will be studying in Australia starting in March, and needs a student visa before classes begin. The problem is the timing - it takes 15 days to process the visa, and he’s leaving for Asia in mid-January. And if he applies for the visa in the US, he was told he needs to still be in the US when he receives it. Anyone have any experience with getting Autralian visas who can help him out?

Hi,
Whilst my visa was not a student visa, I recently obtained a working holiday visa through the internet from the UK (www.immi.gov.au - from memory)
The application said it must be made from the UK, however, at no point did I actually need to be there as I paid online and provided the details with an online application. As mine was a standard application, my visa was granted, then, when I arrived in Australia, my passport number was already in the system.
I just went to the department of immigration and multicultural affairs (?) and they stuck the visa in my passport straight away.
I could have done all this from anywhere…
As long as you (a) pay the fee and (b) do not have any extenuating circumstances, you should be fine to apply online (if possible for a student visa!).
