Happy ANZAC Day!

April 25th is ANZAC Day. The Day that Australia and New Zealand celebrate, or rather use to commemorate, the the Service Men and Women who have fought in campaigns around the world. The day officially commemorates the battle of Gallipoli, the ill fated charge of a Turkish beach where thousands of young Anzacs fought and died gallantly. Marked with many parades, Rememberance Services, and the game of Two Up. RSLs, or Returned Service League’s Clubs become a hotbed of activity throughout this very special day.

A National Holiday, most businesses are closed.

Now on to the fun stuff, Two Up is a game that is only legal on April 25th. Played by the Anzacs in the trenches of WWI, it is a simple betting game played with two pennies and a flipping board. A spinner tosses the coins in the air and people in the crowd bet with each other on whether it will be both heads or both tails. Many pubs and clubs will have Two Up on today. Good luck and Happy ANZAC Day!

“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening
we will remember them.”
– From the Anzac Day Service

The ANZAC Day is a very important event for them. My Australian friend told me that the said celebration/commemoration means so much to them.

Anzac day, an important day for all, but no one understands the real reason.
1914 we went into battle in Turkey fighting an enemy that never threatened Australia, because someone else told us to, and went into battle in the wrong place at the wrong time. The biggest stuff up in Australian military history. And the beginning of many wars against people who never were a threat to Australia. The only war we have fought against someone who threatened Australia was Japan, and then Britian said let them have half Australia, we need Aussies to fight to protect Britain. WW1.WW2. Korea, Timor, Solomons, Vietnam, all because of politics. And we haven’t worked out yet, even though it’s been proven, that it done because it makes money for the Governments. It’s what made the US rich, war based economy.
Anzac should be a reminder that we should never again fight and die to make some polie rich.
But propaganda will brain wash us into thinking it’s neccessary. If we don’t it’ll mean thousands have died for nothing, as they have.

I’ve never seen so many smiles in downtown Sydney. The outpouring of adoration and respect was heartwarming to witness. It definitely has a different flavor than Veterans Day or Memorial Day in the U.S. And the Two-Up was a hoot!
