Moving to Australia- General info

weatherBe aware- most of the buildings in Australia do not have AC, central heat- or for that matter screens on the windows. This means you will need to purchase a heater, fan and a mosquito net depending on the season you are here.

The weather is glorious most of the time and 95% of days you will not miss AC or central heat- but it only takes one mozzie (Aussie Mosquito) biting your knuckle at 4:00 in the morning to completely ruin your night. Check out Ikea, Target, camping/outdoors stores and Holy Sheet! Tend to have Mozzie nets. Ikea- by far the least expensive at around $12. For heaters and fans- look out for Council Clean Ups, public notices of stuff for sale from other travellers, Variety Stores, Woolworths (Woolies), Coles,or if all else fails- Bing Lee’s or Harvey Norman’s (electronic stores). I got a combined heater/fan at Coles for $29.

The lack of AC is a perfect excuse to throw on a huge set of sunnies and head to the pub. The lack of central heating is a perfect excuse to throw on a jumper (sweater) and head to firplace at the pub…. I think you are on your own with the mozzies- unless you go to the all night dance clubs and sleep during the day… then again- that might not be such a bad idea…

This is not really correct. I grew up in Australia in a middle-class home. We had air conditioning in part of our house for quite a number of years. Later we moved to a smaller place and it had central air/heat. Most of friends had air conditioning as do just about every mall, many smaller stores, supermarkets. And we ALWAYS had fly screens on our windows. In fact, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t. Most of the information on this site is excellent and accurate. However, this post was way off.

Thanks for your Comments Emu! I do strive for accuracy, but only have personal experience to draw on. Most newer style homes, shops, offices, and units would of course come with modern amenities. However, most of the older style neigborhoods, office buildings, chicken and fruit shops that I have experienced do not have these items. (Believe me- I sweated and froze in my industrial complex for a year before we mover to a newer office!) On the residential front- I know people that have requested a landlord to install fly screens and sometimes they will honor the request and other times not. To the rest of you lot- good luck and be prepared for all kinds of conditions!
