Exotic Islands

Some of Australia’s 8000 islands are notable, but not for their beautiful beaches or distinction as a popular travel destination. Here are a few of the most interesting, and difficult, to get to:

Macquarie Island: This island is one of Australia’s most distant possessions, and is closer to the Antarctica than Tasmania. It has been home to an Antarctic research and support station since 1948. It is a world heritage area is home to thousands of sea birds and mammals each spring, when they converge to breed.

Groote Eylandt: This large island, on Australia’s top end, is home to a large manganese mining operation that produces 10% of the world’s manganese each year. More than 2 million tons are brought to the surface each year. Groote Eylandt belongs to Aboriginals, who have discouraged tourism to the island. You must have permission to travel there, and the only Australians who work there are a part of the mining industry.

Tiwi Islands: These islands are also found off Australia’s Northern Coast, about 50 miles above Darwin. One of the islands, Melville, is one of the largest in Australia. The Tiwi islands are owned by Aboriginals; the only way to see them is through the expensive Tiwi Tours.
