Sydney and Perth! - Sculpture by the Sea

dsc01014.JPG Exercise, sea, sun, and sculpture. Sculpture by the sea is a fabulous opportunity to take in the natural beauty of the eastern seaboard and get your daily dose of culture all in one. Be warned- this is an EXTREMELY popular event and the sidewalks are absolutely packed on the weekend. If you can swing it- go during the week. The walk starts (or ends) near Bondi Icebergs. Forget even trying to get in there during this event- the wait is likely to be hours. Instead- bring your cossie (swimsuit), grab a picnic to eat en-route near a favorite sculpture that you would like a bit more time to ponder, and enjoy the sunshine.

The 380 and 389 bus run from Circular Quay to Bondi there is a new 333 express service that requires you to have a pass- no cash accepted. The walk does take you up and down stairs and inclines. Wear comfortable shoes and you will need at least minimal fitness.

“First held in 1997, Sculpture by the Sea sees the coastal path from Bondi to Tamarama decorated with outdoor sculptures. It has grown to become a Sydney favourite and now attracts 400,000 visitors to view more than 110 works from both Australian and international artists.”

The brainchild of David Handley, the original Bondi to Tamarama site has continued to be the backdrop for various sculptures every year.

In 2006 the festival also gets a west-coast airing along Perth’s Cottesloe Beach during the autumn.”
