Short Film Festival

Browsing through the weekly free news-mag the Brisbane News, I came across a film festival at the University of Queensland’s Schonell Cinema. It’s called 50 Minutes from Home and over the course of a week (starting today) they’ll show nine new Australian films with a running time of 50 minutes.

It’s a project by the Australian Film Commission designed to give experience to up and coming filmakers that’s more challenging than a short film and not quite as expensive or full-on as a full length feature film.

And as a bonus, since the films are so short, the Schonell is showing 2 for the price of one.

Chris, I saw some of this yesterday somewhere and thought it could be worth a look on this my ‘quiet’ weekend [missed Martha's New Coat at BIFF, plus there's a few that sounding interesting], and this morning I see… HOLYCRAP The Sound of Music - Live is on…

We have to go.

Well, ‘I’ have to go…

Omigod! [Perhaps you don't know about my, er Sound of Music 'thing']…

We have to go…

Go the Schonell for fine cine and value for money! A nostalgic visit to our old stomping ground [UQ] and Queensland’s first cinema [apparently!], Chris and I got 2 movie tickets [for 2 films, seeing as they were 'shorts'], a pizza for 2 [yumbo!] and 2 coffees for… $25!! Bargainarama - oh to be a student again!

The first film, the 13th House, was a little freaky - the life of a drone in the workplace who succumbs to some er, interesting forms of temptation, and makes, ah, ’sacrifices’ for the dangled carrots… the dangled carrots not actually being that impressive, but rather, merely climbing the coporate ladder, which is apparently, aspiraitional [not in this day and age, surely, or at least, not in my world, anyway?!], with some twisted humour and astrology thrown in!

But it was Martha’s new coat we, or at least, I, was there to see… Produced by Rachel Ward [aka Bryan Brown's missus, I mean, actor in her own right!!], and starring their gorgeous and fabulous daughter, sadly christened Matilda. It was a gorgeously moving film about 15yo Matilda’s longing to meet her father, and her resentment of life with her some would say ‘negligent’ drinking/smoking/partying 8mths’ pregs mother and numerous tag along friends/boyfriend. Her little sis was equally charming, as they took a roadtrip on Matilda’s 15th birthday to try to find ‘dad’, of course, only to discover he wanted nothing to do with them once they found him in his ‘new life’ in a ‘new burb’ with his ‘new fam’, etc… It had little to do with Martha’s new coat, however - the birthday present from her school friends! Unless that was some kind of metaphor/tenuous link for ‘wanting to try on someone else’s clothes, be in someone else’s shoes, have a new beginning’??? Perhaps I’m reading too much into it…

Still, ’twas a lovely way to spend a sunny Sunday arve…
