Unlike those unlovely programs from America where a glamour-pants of a presumed bachelor puts himself on the line to win one of a clutch of selected beauties, this one from SBS runs in far superior country. Inspired by the Western Australia Farmers’ Federation’s efforts to promote dating in rural WA, it’s been running in repeats for the past six weeks. Now we have two new episodes with two new bachelors.
Meet 37-year-old Kenton Day, opening up the breakfast counter at his backpacker hostel in Kununurra in the state’s far north. This is not exactly the bush (in fact, it is a most attractive town), but there’s a lot of red dust between there and the nearest shopping mall and there’s a shortage of single women. Kenton started the business with his wife, but she shot through.
“Women? They like you,” he says. “You may be a beer-drinking, smoker, party guy” - and Kenton is clearly all of that - “but they then want to change you to what they want, as a perfect husband. Though the person they fell in love with in the first place was an outgoing, smoking, beer-drinking party animal.”
From Desperately Seeking Sheila
Although this show has already aired, I’d be interested to know if anyone saw it. Reality TV, rural style. Plenty of stuff for people to make fun of, I’m sure.
