APEC Week, News From Sydney
APEC week has officially shut down Sydney Until September 9th 2007. As you read through and watch some of the some of the attached serious articles and associated silly stuff, it does make one wonder about calling Australia the land of the free. A police state has been declared in the Central Business District of Sydney. While Security is obviously important, many feel Australia has gone overboard.
As one TV spokesperson stated: “George Bush wanders around the rest of the world with out all of this fuss.” …

Melbourne Airport Upgrade
Melbourne is at it again! Trying to flash up their image as the shopping Mecca of Australia, now you don’t even have to leave the airport. A development plan has been put underway to basically add a mall onto the Melbourne International Airport.
Aimed at helping out the 12,000+ people who work at the airport, it is set to include a grocery store, bottle shop, bulky goods center (read washing machines and refrigerators), a gym, and even a child care center! Talk about one stop shopping. Now all …

Qantas vs Choice Magazine, The Flying Kangarude?
UH oh, it has been in the news lately that the flying Kangaroo has been named the flying Kangarude! Now my personal experience with them, has to this point, been very good, but thought I’d at least report both sides of the coin.
Qantas has recently been named the worst international airline in a major survey with travellers. Those completing the survey have labeled the national carrier arrogant and overpriced.
In a double blow, the flying Kangaroo’s low cost subsidiary Jet Star was named worst domestic airline. A …

APEC Summit closes Sydney Opera House From Sept 3
The Good news? Sydneysiders will be getting an extra Holiday on Friday September the 7th, 2007. However, that translates to a nightmare for anyone planning to visit during that weekend. The APEC Summit will basically be shutting down the CBD (Central Business District) for a few days before and after.
I just heard on the radio this morning, dear President Bush will be making an early appearance, just to make the lives of commuters even more messy. Transport, the Opera House, and street closures are all on the cards. Anyone who lives near the coast has probably noticed the recent appearance of Military ships running “Ops.”
Check out this article from Boston.com to find out more about closures. I’ll be writing a few more pieces featuring ideas of how to escape the madness. (Check out this blog for regional vacation ideas.)
CANBERRA (Reuters) - From Boston.com:
Harborside Sydney, usually a tourist and restaurant mecca, will be transformed into a high-security fortress when the leaders of 21 Asia-Pacific economies gather for the three-day APEC summit.
Breaking News Alerts More than 4,000 troops, police, federal agents and private security guards will be deployed in the city centre to guard leaders including U.S. President George W. Bush, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and China’s President Hu Jintao.
Sydneysiders are being asked to have a holiday during the September 7-9 meeting as the city centre is locked down within a 2.8-metre (9ft) reinforced concrete fence, meant to keep at bay possibly thousands of anti-globalization protesters.

Australia in the News- Booze is Good for You
Ah, the Aussies! Some very good research dollars have been spent by some of the World’s Top Neurosurgeons and the findings presented at a conference in Carins.
Most of us believe that a big night drinking means a few less brain cells in the morning, but new research suggests this isn’t true. A conference of some of the world’s top neuroscientists in Cairns has heard that there is no evidence drinking alcohol leads directly to the death of brain cells.
In fact, research by Queensland Brain Institute director Professor Perry Bartlett …

Polio Case in Australia, July 1, Thai Airways
July 1st, the first case of Polio flew into Australia in more than 20 years. A word of caution for all travellers- always make sure you immunizations are up to date! If you were on Thai Airways flight TG999 from Bangkok on July 1, you should get in contact with Victorian Authorities.
Almost 250 people were on the flight from Bangkok to Melbourne early this month with a 22-year-old student from Pakistan who was later diagnosed with the first case of polio in Australia in 20 years, officials said.
About 100 of the mostly-Australian passengers had been contacted and efforts were …
