I came across this fantastic and hilarious article via a link from the Daily Boomerang, a very good daily blog about this crazy life and travelling Down Under. Under the pressures of my day job, I have recently been travelling in and around the Singleton NSW area. The Daily Boomerang called me out as having a possible alternative motive! The nerve! (he he he)
From the Daily Boomerang:
Are you a woman and living in Australia and looking for somewhere to go to meet a good bloke?:
“The young women of …
So I’ve lived in Sydney for over two years and haven’t managed to get my lazy backside out to the Hunter Valley which is only around 2 hours outside of Sydney. Man have I been missing out! It took the APEC weekend for me to need an escape and book a tour to go to the Hunter.
We booked a fantabulous weekend retreat at Shelly Beach Cabins at The Entrance. . These little beauties are across the street from the beach, sleep 6 and …
APEC week has officially shut down Sydney Until September 9th 2007. As you read through and watch some of the some of the attached serious articles and associated silly stuff, it does make one wonder about calling Australia the land of the free. A police state has been declared in the Central Business District of Sydney. While Security is obviously important, many feel Australia has gone overboard.
As one TV spokesperson stated: “George Bush wanders around the rest of the world with out all of this fuss.” …
Are you considering coming to Australia and need to contact Hostels, potential employers or Relos (Relatives)? It can be frustrating trying to figure out what numbers to dial. Here is a quick cheat sheet and a link to help you with ALL of your overseas calling.
First you dial the access code to make an international call.
In the US and Canada that is: 011
In the UK, Ireland, India, Germany that is: 00
In Japan that is: 010
Then you dial the country code for Australia, which is 61
Then you dial the area code for the Australian state you’ll …
Alice Springs has a TV show (The Alice), is near Uluru, and is famous for it’s quirky festival- the Henley on the Todd Boat Regatta. The Aussies have such a great sense of humour and love “taking the piss” out of themselves. The Dry River Regatta is a perfect example of this. The fact that the nearest body of water is 1500K away doesn’t seem to hamper the boat race in the slightest…except in 1993 when the event had to be cancelled due to flooding….Bring on the water cannons! …
I know October probably isn’t the first month of the year you would think of to come visit Sydney. BUT! it shoudl be! October really is one of the best months of the year. Spring is just kicking into high gear, and with it- the party season. People are just creeping out from under the blanket of winter gloom and emerge straight onto a picnic blanket with a glass of bubbly already in hand. The Aussies love nothing more than a good outdoor reason to celebrate. October …
The Hunter Valley is a well known wine, coal mining, and race horse breeding area about 2 .5 hours north of Sydney. I am on a work trip and am happliy tucking into a bottle of wine at the affordable yet luxurious Branxton Hotel in the Hunter Valley. Australian Traveller’s Top 100 things to do in Australia lists “Stay in a Country Pub” as one of the items. Well, if you would like to tick that one off your personal list, this place rocks! …

The Good news? Sydneysiders will be getting an extra Holiday on Friday September the 7th, 2007. However, that translates to a nightmare for anyone planning to visit during that weekend. The APEC Summit will basically be shutting down the CBD (Central Business District) for a few days before and after.
I just heard on the radio this morning, dear President Bush will be making an early appearance, just to make the lives of commuters even more messy. Transport, the Opera House, and street closures are all on the cards. Anyone who lives near the coast has probably noticed the recent appearance of Military ships running “Ops.”
Check out this article from Boston.com to find out more about closures. I’ll be writing a few more pieces featuring ideas of how to escape the madness. (Check out this blog for regional vacation ideas.)
CANBERRA (Reuters) - From Boston.com:
Harborside Sydney, usually a tourist and restaurant mecca, will be transformed into a high-security fortress when the leaders of 21 Asia-Pacific economies gather for the three-day APEC summit.
Breaking News Alerts More than 4,000 troops, police, federal agents and private security guards will be deployed in the city centre to guard leaders including U.S. President George W. Bush, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and China’s President Hu Jintao.
Sydneysiders are being asked to have a holiday during the September 7-9 meeting as the city centre is locked down within a 2.8-metre (9ft) reinforced concrete fence, meant to keep at bay possibly thousands of anti-globalization protesters.
