The Whitsundays region will be promoted as an ideal winter destination in a new $800,000 advertising campaign aimed at those living in southern Australia.

The campaign, which will run until the end of June, is the second stage of the Whitsundays region’s ‘Out of the Blue’ promotion. From Campaign to push Whitsundays in winter

Sunshine state still tops for tourists

It appears the sun is still shining brightly on Queensland’s lucrative tourism industry, with the state’s main tourism body showing the sunshine state is still Australia’s most popular tourist destination.

According to Tourism Queensland’s annual report, the sector injected more than $18 billion into the Queensland economy during the last financial year.

Queensland attracted 39 per cent of Australia’s interstate visitors for 2003 to 2004, 15 per cent more than New South Wales and three times as many as Victoria. From Sunshine state still tops for tourists

I wonder how they measure that, and seperate it from business/work travelers?

Sirromet Winery

Fellas, if you’re looking for a great location to take a date for an afternoon drive and lunch, I’d have to recommend Sirromet Winery and Lurleen’s Restaurant. Situated on a hill in Mt Cotton, about 20-30 minutes south of Brisbane, you can sit out on the back deck of the restaurant and see all the way to Stradbroke Island. The food was fantastic and the service was exceptional. It’s not cheap ($30+ for a main), but it’s a beautiful location and the wine is very tasty. The website says it won an award for informal dining, but I felt …

State of Origin III

The third and deciding game of the State of Origon series kicks off tonight and it has all the makings of a classic. The Blues coach (who every QLD’er loves to hate) is stepping down after the series (although he’s said that before too) and one of their key players who made a comeback for this series wants to go out on a winning note.

Queensland, for their part, have never won at Telstra stadium in 9 attempts. They have a pretty stable team set-up and they’re coming off the back of a great win in Brisbane 3 weeks ago.

Whatever …

Queensland’s climate allows nudists, and tourists, to enjoy it all year

Here’s a no-brainer: warm weather = more nudists. Gee, who would’ve thought? Queensland’s climate allows nudists, and tourists, to enjoy it all year

World’s fastest on narrow tracks

Australia’s fastest train has been a popular and trouble-free way of travelling through tropical Queensland, especially for pensioners and backpackers.

Despite competing in an era of heavily discounted air travel, the high-speed tilt train service between Brisbane and Cairns had almost 70,000 passengers in its first year of operation.

Although the full price of a one-way trip from Brisbane to Cairns is $280, pensioners can travel for as little as $22.

The train completes the 1680-kilometre journey in 25 hours, seven hours less than the previous rail service. From World’s fastest on narrow tracks

Ugh, that’s still a long time to be spending …

Saturday at Eumundi Markets

As the weather begins to get warmer, the hankering for the beach grows - for me at least. With the Saturday just gone supposed to reach the high 20°C, it was a good excuse to get out of Brisvegas for the day.

Even though I was up at 5:30am, I wasn’t on the road until 7-ish but there was minimal traffic and roadworks so I was up to Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast by about 8:30am to pick up a friend. Our goal for the day was the Eumundi Markets. Eumundi (pronounced You-mundy) is a small town in the Noosa Hinterland, but the only thing I really knew about it was that they brewed their own beer. Seems they’ve expanded into the arts and crafts market deal as well and they do a great job.

Queensland a bloody rip-off!

According to a recent news article, backpackers are getting the hump with being ripped off by shoddy tour operators in Queensland. So much so that tourism numbers have taken a hit.

The thing that stood out for me about this article was the power of word of mouth. Through message forums, travel blogs and plain ol’ face-to-face, the message is being delivered and travellers are spending their money elsewhere.

While I’m loathe to see government interference in this industry, clearly there has to be some action taken to repair the state’s reputation. Obviously the traveller traffic is not …
