APEC Week, News From Sydney
APEC week has officially shut down Sydney Until September 9th 2007. As you read through and watch some of the some of the attached serious articles and associated silly stuff, it does make one wonder about calling Australia the land of the free. A police state has been declared in the Central Business District of Sydney. While Security is obviously important, many feel Australia has gone overboard.
As one TV spokesperson stated: “George Bush wanders around the rest of the world with out all of this fuss.” …

Holden: The Aussie GM to Cut Jobs
While Australia is a tourist mecca, there are still plenty of social issues that plague their surfer laden shores. One such issue, over cars, has reached the land down under. Lately there has been all kinds of debate over the future of climate change, alternative fuel cars, and the future of Australian manufacturing. Holden is basically the Aussie branch of General Motors. Like their American cousins, according to press releases, more job cuts are getting ready to affect Australia…

Know Before You Go: 29 Abandoned Uranium Mines to be Incorporated into Kakadu!
Kakadu National Park is a major destination and highlight for many travellers to Australia. One of the issues surrounding the park that travellers should be aware of is Uranium Mining. From the road trains to the environmental impact, the mines are a major part of the Northern Territory and it’s tourism.
The locals are as divided about the issue of mining as the rest of the world. If you do have the good fortune to sit and chat with a Fair Dinkum Territorian, I’m sure you’ll hear their view point. While it is always fine to have discussions about highly political issues, please be respectful. Remember- the people you meet- live there and are affected by the industry everyday of their lives.
Whatever your personal/political opinion on Uranium mining, the environment and indigenous people have just scored a win. Recently an agreement has been made to extend KAKADU National Park by a further 466 hectares with the incorporation of 29 EXPIRED mining leases into the World Heritage Area.

The Ashes, Australia beats England 5-0 in Cricket!
Australia Inflicts Ashes Whitewash read the Headlines this morning. OK- I admit- being a girl I am not so knowledgeable on the sport- but it is always good when the home team whoops arse don’t you think? Condolences to all the Pommies out there. The good news is- most that I have talked to- did still seem to enjoy their trip to OZ since we custom ordered cool weather and rain to make them feel at home. He He He.
But What is the Ashes- many of you might say? In fact many of you might say- what is cricket? I’ll tackle the later question first as a way to stir up a few folks from cricket loving countries. Read at your own risk….
Cricket- is a bizarre baseball-type sport that is a fabulous way for a bunch of guys to stand around a field all weekend long drinking beer, hanging out in the sun and occasionally catching a ball. Only two players are really engaged at any given time- the baller (pitcher) and the batter. The rest of the guys mostly hang out, scratch themselves, smoke, play in the dirt, and generally enjoy themselves. Honestly- I think the world would be a much better place if all warring countries took it up as a way to settle disputes. By the time the Test (match/game) was over, no one would really remember what the problem was in the first place.

Microsoft Office To include Aussie Slang! S’truth!!!
Fair Dinkum! Believe it. Microsoft Australia has decided it is high time to add Australian slang to it’s dictionary. Nothing is more pitiful than an Aussie trying to write about chucking a Sickie, his Ute, or Trackies and not knowing how to spell it now is there!
Microsoft has created a panel to collect the new vocabulary. They are to look at the key Australian words that aren’t slang so much as common words. Additionally, the words are not allowed to be offensive.
Apparently NSW needs to rally! Tooheys beer is not yet in but both VB and Foster’s are! Aussies are taking part in an online poll that has drawn more than 24,000 voters so far.

The Australian Spirit in Elle Macpherson!
Do do dodo do doo dooo… refrains of MC Hammer’s Can’t Touch This are running through my head! Elle Macpherson, Australia’s very own “Body” and supermodel is too fast for a London mugger. Australian’s are known as a cheeky brash group- and good on em! While getting ready to attend a Move for Aids chairty ball in London November 10th, a masked thief snatched her hand bag. Not one to stay down from a fight- she snatched it back. Can’t touch this….. Ah the spirit …
