After the excitement of water-skiing, it was back to the house to clean up and get ready for a quiet night out of dinner, a few drinks and some pool at an Irish pub in the Valley called Dooley’s. A quiet night because we had to be up at 4am (for Sean, I wasn’t gettin’ up til at least 5am) to get Sean to the airport on time.
We’re a bit better organized this time. We are planning a litte BootsnAll get-together this Thursday, January 15th in the city. No need to RSVP, just show up if you can make it.
We’re going to kick things off at the Palace Backpackers pub, the Down Under bar, at 6-6:30pm. If you’re in town after work and want to meet up earlier, just let me know. Our schedule is flexible.

So, as I was saying, I first met Sean in Brisbane earlier this year, then just three days later, Ant in Seattle; Chris in the middle of the year; and now finally, Nick, then, as the rule seems to be, in a few days time, in Bangkok, the travelling lovebirds, Ant and Claudia…
Any closet Brisbane BnAers, get out and join us!
Integrating Ging
Got a call last night from Kristy Falcon, a BootsnAll member who had contacted us about doing a travelblog. During our emails I found out that she was coming up to BrisVegas for a few days and asked if she wanted to meet up for a beer or coffee. We swapped rough descriptions over the phone and arranged to meet outside the Palace Backpackers on Edward St since it was near the train station.
Last night I met with Maree, one of our QLD Insiders at a buzzing neighbourhood in Rosalie.
Lots of cafes, restaurants and ice creameries all crammed into about 2 blocks, with outdoor seating made easy by plenty of large heaters. This place has grown plenty since I was last here and was very popular on a Saturday night.
It was long overdue, but we finally had a BootsnAll Brisbane meeting that was planned more than a day in advance. As a result, we got a good turn out and it was a great night.
Even the heavy rain of the last few days did not deter folks from wandering down (most came after work in the city) to the Down Under Bar at the Palace Backpackers. When Sean and I arrived around 6pm, Ging and Janita were already there. We quickly moved to a table and heard some more stories from Ging’s recent trip to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Photos were produced and we pored over those as well.
After a night of barely any sleep, and a full day at the cricket (and the prospect of a long day of driving the next day), what better way to end the evening than with a few beers? Even though Sophie and her friends were pretty knackered after sitting in the sun all day, they were keen to hit their local pub for a couple.
The Coogee Bay Hotel is just a short walk down the hill from Sophie’s place (and a middling to difficult stagger back up it, depending on how long you stay there). Sean and I walked back to our hotel from the cricket, showered up and, using Sophie’s excellent directions, found the pub with no problem.
George Dunn, of Swagman fame, was in Brisbane for a couple of days and we’d made arrangements to watch the Fiji v. USA rugby world cup match. Unfortunately, those plans fell through, but he said the match was a good one.
Instead, I jumped on the train and met up with him, his brother Joe and Aussie girl Nikki at the Embassy Hotel in the city on Thursday night.
As I arrived I was handed a free drink coupon at the door and found George and co about to start a game of pool. Upon finding out about the coupon, he went to the front door, turned on the US charm and returned with several more coupons.
Making our way through the free beers, George asked about BootsnAll and its future plans and Nikki gave me the scoop on all sorts of new visa options for those wishing to spend extended amounts of time in the US. She also gave me a contact at IEP, which was very cool.
This evening I became the third BootBoy to meet Jeanette Bergman in person. We’ve known her for years via BootsnAll, but her first attmept to come visit us in the US occured over September 11th, 2001 (while her plane was in the air, I believe).
This afternoon I met up with Anita, who had visited us in Eugene, OR back in March. We met in downtown Perth and chatted over coffee in a Dôme cafe.
