Second to none, mate

People always say that Melbourne is in Sydney’s shadow, but really, does anything thing it is anymore? Sure, more people may fly into Sydney, but it seems like most make it 8 hours south to Australia’s ’second city’.

Second to none, mate

Melbourne edges closer to Sydney as Australias top tourist destination

Watch out Sydney! The city’s southern sister is making a move on Sydney’s dollars. According to Tourism Research Australia, Melbourne has 12% of the combined domestic and international spending while Sydney has 15%. The commonwealth games in Melbourne next year should help the city boost numbers even higher. Perhaps now Sydney won’t be so content to rest on her laurels. Melbourne’s Brunswick Street

I didn’t do much sightseeing while I was in Melbourne for a couple of days. Just met up with a couple of old, old friends. One from high school and another from my drunken days in merry England. But before I left I’d asked an acquaintance who had lived in Melbourne for a few years where I should go if I just wanted to walk around somewhere cool for a few hours. She had recommended Brunswick Street in Fitzroy and independently my friend decided to take me there to show me a slice of Melbourne.

Daily Dose: Happy Melbourne Cup Day!

melbournecup.jpgThe Race that stops the Nation! The Aussies are mad about their horse racing and today is the crowning glory of the Racing Season- The Melbourne Cup. Fashion, Glamour, Champers (Champagne), Stunning Horses, Lush Grounds, and the primitive pounding of the hooves all get right to the soul of the punters (folks who are out to “try their luck” or are “along for the ride”) all around Oz. It makes for a fabulously fun day and indeed many days for some people.

Victoria gets today as an extra Statewide Holiday- but the rest of us are stuck working away wishing, just for today, that we lived in Melbourne. However- all is not lost! Most work places will have a lunch and a Television to watch the GG’s run (horses) or unofficially let everyone go to lunch and not really expect them back afterwards.

Eternal flame put out by vandals

In a bozo, stupid move by inconsiderate teenagers (likely) or idiotic adults, the Eternal flame in Melbourne has been extinguished.

Guards found shattered beer bottles around the flame, which has gone out a number of times since 1954, although rarely due to vandalism. Eternal flame put out by vandals

Melbourne’s the new black for Sydney fashion shoppers

Numbers are finally backing up what Melbournians have known for years: their shopping is better than that of their northern neighbor. With almost 50% of New South Wales residents ranking Melbourne as the place to shop in Australia, the focus seems to be on ’strip shopping’ versus mall shopping. Melbourne, Victoria

Australia’s second largest city is only an 8 hour drive from its first, but it has a very different feel. The baret-wearing artist’s answer to Sydney, Melburnians are fiercely protective of their cultured city of 3.4 million. Often ranked one of the most livable cities in the world, Melbourne has an array of activities from the fast-paced nightlife to cultured exhibitions of art and theatre to frenzied sport events, with the spotlight on November’s Melbourne Cup. Melbourne is located on Australia’s southern coast, in the eastern third of the country.
