Lawn Bowls by the Brisbane River

If you’re looking for something to do that’s a little different, but still plenty of fun, I can highly recommend an afternoon of Lawn Bowls at the Merthyr Bowls Club in New Farm.

Brisbane, Queensland

Brissie is a capital that enjoys its location. Directly above the rockin Gold Coast, and below the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, the city is a popular host for in-transit tourists, both foreign and Australian. However, those who visit the city for more than a few days can come to appreciate Brisbane’s wide range of activities and laid back pace. Unlike Sydney, downtown Brisbane is not located directly on open water, instead offering expensive river-front views.

The Belgian Beer Café ~ Brussels

Belgium is famous for a few things, chocolate and strong beer being the two most relevant to me. My parents had told me about this Belgian beer cafe in downtown Brisbane and I’d been meaning to get down there and sample their wares.

Brisbane Weather

Two weeks ago, it was the hottest day in February ever. Today, we’re getting a Severe Weather Warning with a chance of a cyclone developing. I can already hear the wind picking up outside and the rain has just started to come down as well. As the weather lady on the news last night said, be sure to tie down the outdoor furniture.

Food Markets at New Farm Park, Brisbane

5:20 seems awful early to be getting up on a Saturday morning (how long since I’ve been a paperboy?), but that’s what I did to go to the food markets at New Farm Park.

Look, up in the sky!

Did anyone else in the Brisbane region see a fireball streaking across the sky during the early hours (we’re talking 5-ish) of Sunday morning?

I won’t go into the details of how I happened to still be awake from the night before, but the three other people I was with saw it too. Bron had the presense of mind to snap a photo, but we’ve yet to see the film.

Seen nothing on the news, or in the papers this morning about it. It was very comet-esque in appearance, but the sky was light. You could also draw comparisons with the …

Touch Footy Champs

Last night was the grand final of the mixed touch footy competition I’ve been playing in to keep myself fit. My team, “Touch Us If You Can”, is a team loosely held together by people who know people who know people. The only person I knew is my brother.

For those unfamiliar with touch football, it’s like rugby league except you don’t tackle anyone, just touch them. It’s like flag football is to American football. It’s usually 7-a-side, very fast and a lot of fun.

I’ll spare the details of the season, but we’ve had a mixed roster throughout, including the imported …

The Chill Bar - Brisbane

With temperatures in Brisbane supposed to hit 38° Celcius (100°F) by Friday, folks are looking for ways to beat the heat. As my train was leaving Roma Street station the other day, I spied a poster advertising the Chill Bar.

According to the poster they have not one, but two Scandinavian inspired ice bars, and over 80 imported vodkas to choose from while the rest of the city swelters. And if you’re really keen to get away from the sauna outside, you can hire out the Vodka Room - chilled to 5°C. They’ll even provide you with a fur jacket.

The …

Boost to Queensland Tourism

Qantas to fly non-stop between Brisbane, Los Angeles

This will be a great benefit for QLD tourism if Qantas can keep the price down and maybe a few more backpackers might leave Sydney for later rather than get trapped down there.
