Pipe Dreams

Awhile ago, Sean suggested that I left a present in the pipes of the BnA office. Well, I think I’ve outdone myself here at BnA Oz…

Great big hole

Watch your step

What actually happened was my brother accidently hit the toilet pipe while he was jackhammering the concrete path. It had to be replaced by the white PVC pipe, which is probably just as well anyway.

Still, it’ll make for an interesting journey if I happen to have a few too many wines at my farewell family gathering on Sunday arvo.

Touch Footy Grand Final

After two solid days of rain, the powers that be decided that our touch footy grand final would go ahead as planned. Driving out there I was alternately struggling to see out the windscreen of the car and being blinded by massive lightning strikes, one of which blew out about 100 metres worth of street lights on the freeway. Exciting stuff.

Heavy Rain

The weather report earlier in the week suggested we might get some scattered showers developing today. What actually happened was that we got absolutely dumped on during the early hours of morning with a cracking thunderstorm.

I got woken up by thunder around 5am and judging by the flashes I could see through the curtains it was quite a light show as well. At the moment, just before noon, there’s blue skies and warm sunshine. We certainly needed the rain and will gladly take more of it, but I’ll not complain about a sunny day either.

Bridge to Brisbane

On Sunday morning I will be joining thousands of other people jamming one lane of Brisbane’s Gateway Bridge as we make our way to New Farm Park.

No, it’s not protest march lamenting the demise of Friends. It’s the annual Bridge to Brisbane charity run for the benefit (this year) of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association of Queensland.

Ging was the instigator of this philanthropy, but I’m looking forward to it. I haven’t been on a fun run in years. We’re only doing the 4.25km run instead of the 12km, and I’ve just looked at the map …

Domestic Duties

Spent a very quiet weekend taking care of a few things that I’d neglected over the past couple of months’ worth of weekends.

Extreme Sunday

Sunday was a perfect way to end a fairly quiet weekend. It started off with breakfast at the very civilised hour of 10am at Pandemonium Café in the very trendy suburb of Paddington. I was joined by Paul, Ging and Bronathon and, after a quiet start and a couple of excellent coffees we were off to the races - moving our tables into the sun and no doubt leaving tables within conversational earshot shaking their heads.

After breakfast we walked a half block up the street to Always Habit, a men’s clothing store run by Vanessa Hoe. She owns another store in the Valley and will soon be opening another in the city. Ging had recently been there with Paul to assist him in parting with a fair chunk of change for a new suit and related apparel. Ging and Vanessa had bonded during the two hour experience and so it was really the only logical place to go when I expressed my need to buy my very first suit.

Brisbane River Festival 2004

If you’re wandering down by the Brisbane River this Sunday afternoon towards West End you’ll no doubt see the more than 20,000 rubber duckies battling it out for victory as part of the Great Brisbane Duck Race. The winner earns the owner a brand new car, and some poor bastard will have to fish the rest out of the water.

River Festival is back again and there’s so much stuff going on there’s no way to see it all. Instead, check out the website and pick & choose your poison. There’s eating, debating, running, and cleaning, concerts, cruises, and …

Fun Run ain’t so fun

Yesterday was the Bridge to Brisbane fun run for Paul, Ging and I, although as EB suggested, it wasn’t all fun.

The 4.25km race we had signed up for started a little later than expected due to stragglers from the previous 12km race. There was a crowd of about 4000 competing in our race and we were all crammed into a small sidestreet waiting for things to get underway. The bloke with the microphone was belting out suspect jokes that were right on the borderline acceptable in a family atmosphere (Mum, what’s an orgasm?).

Tibetan Kitchen

Not knowing much about Tibetan and Nepalese cuisine, I was pleasantly surprised by my visit to the Tibetan Kitchen in Fortitude Valley last night. I don’t really know what I was expecting, but perhaps something to do with yaks and their various by-products?

On the fairly extensive menu, there was not a yak to be found. In fact, the only semi-unusual dish was the goat. Instead there was lots of chicken and lamb (always a favourite), and substantial veggie fare.

The staff were friendly, the prices were very reasonable for a good amount of food, and the Bee Gees were playing …
