Daily Dose: Accommodation Resources in OZ

dsc00583.JPGI know Hostels are the normal fall back of most travellers on a budget, however, Australia lends itself to exploring other options as well. Most accommodation in this country is not on the Internet unless you are in really touristy hotspots and major cities. Don’t be afraid to check out the local B&B’s on the side of the road or the cheap motor lodge. That said, here are a few web sites that can help your online research for accommodation options in Oz.

Finding an Apartment in Sydney…Ready.. Set.. Go!

viewfromthetop This will more than likely be the most horrifying experience of arriving in Australia. Customs, quarantine, and visa officials have got nothin’ on the apartment-hungry-maddened-hordes and indifferent real estate agents.

In Sydney- the housing market is extremely competitive- if you are moving from overseas- bring along past landlord contact information and if you can swing it- a recommendation letter. To find an apartment- look in the papers on Saturday and on the Internet www.domain.com.au as a couple of resources to start with. Once you get the paper you will have to read it as you run and come up with a list of several you want to see because…horror…they are only open for 10-15 minutes at a time.

When you roll up to see an apartment still reeling from the night before…sunnies and flip flops on (this IS Australia riiiight!)cappuccino in one hand… paper circled in pen in the other…you will immediately be smacked upside you sore head by the tension in the air. There will be 6 other couples also lined up to see YOUR perfect apartment! All with neat and tidy appearance, matching t-shirts that proclaim “Pick Me!”, references, extra pens for filling out applications, and running shoes laced up!

Sydney- Northern Beaches- The Arms

arms
The Newport Arms is a Northern Beaches institution. A massive rambling “Hotel” or huge pub/bistro. ‘The Arms’ also has accommodation and overlooks Pittwater Bay on the west side of the Northern Beaches Penninsula. An ideal spot for Sunday Afternoon drinks, the outdoor area is enjoyable.

Australia Travel Market- Travel Website

logo.gif The following is a paid review: Short on time? Need to stretch those travel dollars? Feel like you do more research and planning than travelling? Don’t feel like searching each individual travel site for the best deals? Australia Travel Market is ready to help.

www.Australiatravelmarket.com is more than just a website, it is a price comparison super site! Sometimes called a Meta Search engine the Global Travel Market off-shoot, searches and compares prices from 100’s of travel websites to find you the best deal. By doing so, you can save time and hopefully loads of cash!

Search at their one stop shop for airfare, hotel, insurance, tours, car hire, cruises and special package deals. Prices are listed in pounds, but the do provide a handy currency conversion function for those of us who tend towards mathmatically challenged. Australiatravelmarket.com is not a travel agent. After putting in your criteria, you can then choose the most appropriate offer and be sent directly to the website advertising the special deal that you are searching for.

Eden, Australia, The Crown and Anchor

dsc02673.JPGYes, there is actually a place called Eden, and for the people of Australia there is no surprise that it is a coastal town on this fabulous continent. Located in the region known as the Sapphire Coast of New south Wales, it is a half way point between Sydney and Melbourne. A small coastal town, it has a views to take your breath away, shops and a town center oozing with charm, interesting walks, a hilariously sinister history, and a gory-bloody-killer legend that keeps all factions happy (for those that don’t like charming little kitschy towns). The Killer by the way a whale….

BUT!!!! the literal crown jewel of the town is the The Crown and Anchor historic Bed and Breakfast. A renovated hotel from 1840, it is one of the original buildings and is lush! Not on a backpacker budget, but also not as expensive as you would think. That said, it was EXCELLENT value for the money spent. In fact- one of the few places I’ve ever stayed in my life that I would say- absolutely worth every cent.

The owners have lovingly remodeled the property with period pieces but have thoughtfully included nice modern bathrooms and a kitchen to compliment the 1840’s grace. Plush four poster beds and champagne await you on arrival. Hot tea, cocoa and an assortment of Ports are available for your late night enjoyment. Unlike some B&B’s which creep me out, you have your own bathroom, and most importantly, plenty of privacy from your fellow boarders.

Hostels, Motels, and Hotels- General Info on Country NSW

Back in the states- I was a research junkie. I would have all possible hostels, hotels, and motels located and know their pricing structure and availabilty. Australia does NOT lend itself to this kind of research. Most of the small towns and even in some of the big ones- many of the motels are not online. You won’t know about them until you reach your destination.

At first this completely stressed me out. However, I have learned to accept it. I travel a great deal for business and stay in hostels and motels all over NSW. I never have a reservation and generally only have a vague idea of how the towns are set up. Strangely enough, to my North American mind, this is perfectly fine.

Most of the little towns have one or two main streets and there is usually a tourist information center located right in the middle of town. If driving in- there are always signs pointing their way to the City and Information Centers. Generally only open 9-5, they are incredibly helpful. Kangaroos and other wildlife are major road hazards starting at dusk so I don’t really recommend driving late at night anyway.

Northern Territory- “Doing The Triangle”

dsc00051.JPG When visiting the Northern Territory- a very common route is called The Triangle This is basically Darwin to Jabiru to Pine Creek or Katherine and back up to Darwin via Litchfied Park. When taking on this Great driving route many people are apprehensive envisioning vast kilometers of nothingness.

Northern Territory- Cooinda

An integral part of doing The Triangle is Cooinda. Cooinda – even though it is one of the more substantial dots on the map- is only an aboriginal cultural center, resort, and gas station. There is no town. Granted- it is a nice resort. Cooinda is known as the Home of Yellow Waters. All of the Wildlife Cruises on the Yellow Waters leave from here. Cruises run between 1.5 and 2 hours.
